The Only Gay in the Village? Help Record LGBTQ+ History

A researcher at the University of Exeter is collecting personal stories from men in the LGBTQ+ community who lived in Dorset, Somerset, Devon or Cornwall between 1967 and 1987. The project, “The Only Gay in the Village? Love and Sex Between Men in Southwest England,” aims to preserve memories of relationships, community life, discrimination and activism during this key period.

Who Can Take Part?

  • Men from the LGBTQ+ community who spent significant time in the Southwest between 1967–1987

  • Anyone of any gender who supported or worked with these men, such as health workers, journalists or campaigners

How It Works

A short introductory call is followed by a longer recorded interview, either online or in person at a convenient location.

Your story can help build an important LGBTQ+ archive for future generations.
