LGBT Transnational identity and the Media
Monday 20 February 12:45-13:45 | The Octagon, Talbot Campus
Dr Christopher Pullen, The Media School
Today, many non-western LGBTs are advancing opportunities of sexual liberty, often placing themselves within vulnerable, oppressive, and abject conditions. Examples include - advancing oppression in Uganda, and historical oppression within Jamaica and parts of the Middle East, and conversely new civil liberties and new cultural productions within South America, South Africa, Malaysia and China.
With reference to Dr Pullen’s new anthology, which includes the contribution of over 20 multicultural authors, the presentation will consider new media connectivity, and identity potentials for non-heterosexuals. The significance of religion and the opportunity of documentary forms are explored. The use of online media, in the formation of educational and community oriented groups, are central points of concern. Significantly, both the problem and the opportunity of western oriented constructs of sexual diversity are related, revealing LGBT non-western perspectives as inspirational, contemporary and courageous.

Open Lecture: Changing the Game - Gay Athletes then and now
Tuesday 28 February 11:00-12:00 | Student Hall, Talbot House, Talbot Campus
Professor Eric Anderson, Department of Sport Studies, University of Winchester
This lecture will reveal how organised, competitive team sports were founded on the principles of turning young boys into macho, heterosexual, sexist and homophobic men. It will address how sport has changed in the previous 100 years, mainly in becoming more inclusive. The speaker will show that gay male athletes are thriving in sport today, highlighting the remarkably gay friendly attitudes of today’s male youth. While organised sport still has a way to go, it is evolving rapidly.
Light refreshments will be provided

Rufus Stone: a film about love, sexual awakening and treachery (30 minutes)
The Making of Rufus Stone: a short film by Trevor Hearing, The Media School (7 minutes)
Monday 27th February 12:45- 13:45 | W241 Weymouth House, Talbot Campus
Rufus Stone is the key output of the three-year ‘Gay and Pleasant Land?’ research project led by BU academic, Dr Kip Jones. The project, about positioning, ageing and gay life in rural South West England and Wales, is a work package in the UK-wide New Dynamics of Ageing Project ‘Grey and Pleasant Land?: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of the Connectivity of Older People in Rural Civic Society’. The projects are funded by Research Councils UK and the film was produced by Parkville Pictures.
The stories which form the foundation of the script for Rufus Stone are entirely based upon research undertaken by Dr Jones and his team from the University’s School of Health and Social Care with the assistance of a citizens’ Advisory Committee.
The film’s ‘fictional’ story was created over time using composite characters and situations, all uncovered in the ‘Gay and Pleasant Land?’ research project, through in-depth biographic life story interviews, focus groups, and actual site visits to the rural locations where older gay or lesbian citizens were living.
“Our hope is that the film will dispel many of the myths surrounding ageing, being gay and life in British rural settings,” said Jones, in his role as Executive Producer of Rufus Stone. “The film renders poetically the way in which our memories morph and play with our histories, much as dappled sunlight reveals, then conceals, an idyllic landscape”.
There will be time for discussion following the screening of the films.
